If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me if we carry Great Lakes Brewing Co. I could retire at the ripe age of 26. Now that I have actually tried one of these delicious beers I can see the hype, Amen! Halleluiah!
Out of their stellar line up, one of them stood out to me more than the rest. Their robust, smoky, dark porter called Edmund Fitzgerald is a standout for Great lakes which is located in Cleveland, Ohio. This beer might be bigger than the “King” himself aka Lebron James of the Cleveland Cavs.
The name comes from a tragedy that happened on November 10, 1977 when the largest ship in great American lakes sank with her crew of 29 into Lake Superior due to weather conditions. Edmund Fitzgerald is a fitting name with its bold but, subtle flavors.
It pours a deep, dark brown with tan head which quickly resolves to a fine lacing. The nose has roasted malts that entice you to try this porter. The body is not heavy nor light but, just what you would expect. The flavors are many and do not shy away. I came away with chocolate, pine, and slight citrus combined with a smoky smooth finish.
Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald has quickly become one of my favorite porters here at Lighthouse and I am sure it will become one of your favorites as well. Stop by Wilmington’s oldest bottle shop and pick up a 6 pack this week!
Cheers, Jason “J” King
